Nowadays, Filipinos are well-acquainted with Korean culture. This has resulted from the increasing number of Koreans coming to the Philippines in the recent years. They come to visit the country’s tourist spots, to live and to work, to visit their loved ones, or to learn and study English. However, one of the most important factors that made Filipinos become familiar with Korean culture is the emergence of Korean dramas and movies on Philippine television. Many Korean movies and TV drama series have been aired in the country’s TV networks for the past five years. Among them are Hana Kim, Protect the Boss, I Miss You, Love Rain, Faith, and many more.
In year 2014, there will be another set of Korean TV series to be shown in Philippine television, too. It includes Pretty Man, The Heirs, and Good Doctor. Like the previous Korean shows, these upcoming Korean TV series are expected to get good feedback from its viewers, particularly Filipinos. Certainly, these shows and movies whenever shown on TV are not only watched by Koreans staying in the country, but also by Filipinos who are fond of watching TV drama series. In fact, a lot of Filipinos like watching Korean drama other than the ones starred by Filipino celebrities, and many of them come from the teenage and young adult population.
Filipinos’ preferences and wants in a film and TV series make them appreciate Korean dramas and movies a lot. It is already known for a fact that so many, if not all, Filipinos like watching TV drama series and movies, and they are inclined to take pleasure on those shows that include themes on family, love, and relationships. Korean shows and movies have these themes, too. Most Korean TV series and movies shown on Philippine television show the importance of family, the value of love, and the exciting and thrilling moments in relationships, and they show these themes very well, in a way that gets into a viewer’s emotions and awakens his/her desire to watch more.
Hence, one reason why Filipinos enjoy watching and relate well with Korean dramas and movies is because these dramas and movies also show themes on family, love, and relationships. Another good reason why many Filipinos have a thing about Korean TV drama series and movies is their concept of beauty. Filipinos tend to admire Korean beauty. They like looking at people with a fair complexion, soft skin, and “cute-looking” eyes which Koreans have. Many Filipinos think of a “pretty” or “beautiful” or “handsome” person as someone who has Korean features. Besides these, Korean storylines and video quality have improved significantly.
Currently, there is quite a number of Korean dramas considered “Best Korean Drama Telecasted in the Philippines”.
